Maurice Ganis at Rebecca Camhi Gallery

19.03.2018

Rebecca Camhi Gallery presents Maurice Ganis's third solo exhibition.

Maurice Ganis was born in Trikala, Greece in 1973. He studied at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Italy, Israel and Greece. Ganis lives and works between Athens and Tel-Aviv. The show consists of paintings, namely oil on canvas and oil on linen, and they reflect the artist and the world around him, both digital and physical. While telling a story of private and non-private experiences, he transports us through painting in a parallel world what lies on the borderline between imagination and reality, of technology and the material world.

With the arrival of 21st century concepts like virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality have flooded our everyday life. Digital worlds like Second Life, social media like Twitter and equipment for the experience of virtual reality like 3D glasses make up the pedestal on which various events take place and which we observe in magnification as if through a lens. From the neigbourhoods of Tel Aviv to the digital dancefloors of discotheques, Ganis's painting unwittingly functions as the generator of fascinating worlds. The limits remain uncleal, and through this hazy landscape various realities emerge.

In the works "Airview" we discern buildings depicted three-dimensionally, as the result of glasses both of old and new technology. The "Untitled" works bear a double meaning, as they depict mouseholes from houses which remind of the walls of Jerusalem. "Peace" shows the moment when the artist takes a photo of his reflection in the small round mirror on the edge of the train station, his form alluding to comic figures. In the "Grid" series he was influenced by the digital disco areas of Second Life.

As the artist has stated: "There is a parallel between the way I edit an image on the computer with the way I treat my paintings."

Maurice Ganis will attend the opening of the exhibition.
