Jason Dodge at Akwa Ibom

02.11.2020

Berlin-based artist Jason Dodge is staging a solo exhibition in six venues simultaneously during the last week of October and the first week of November in Athens, New York City, Vienna, Paris, Brussels and Torino. The exhibition ‘They lifted me into the sun again and packed my empty skull with cinnamon’ takes its name from a poem by Thomas James, where the narrator is a person in Ancient Egypt describing its own mummification.

Dodge is orchestrating the exhibition’s six simultaneous editions in absentia, and has asked others to perform the installation as surrogates. He has sent the same selection of items — including Bayer aspirin advertisements, Marigold petals, batteries, forks and a found shopping list — to all the spaces along with instructions how to install the items in their space. Further instructions have come from dancer and choreographer Alix Eynaudi, who has composed a score that defines how the items in the shopping list are to be bought and unpacked in the room.

The exhibition’s iteration in Athens is taking place at Akwa Ibom, and the installation of the shopping list items has been performed by Helena Papadopoulos.
