Eighteen Greek Visual Artists Exhibit Just Ceramics at Space52

08.11.2018

SPACE 52 presents the group show “Athens in a tank” exhibition curated by the artist Giorgos Tserionis. Greek and foreign artists, who use ceramics in their artistic practice and function as a record of contemporary Greek reality. Artist engagement with clay presents their dialogue on the inexhaustible potential of the medium and marks the increasing dynamic of ceramic art by artists for first time.

The works of the exhibition function as answers to the question “How concept of Athens is used as a space and what would be the content of its inhabitants? Time (together with the experience of the myth itself called the human body) is temporarily or definitely separated from the space that stands before us with a blanket of symbolism or rather ready to embody everything. A body that overcomes beauty or ugliness.
On the contrary, concept of the tank refers, in a completely abstract, deformed, as a rhetorical construction environment surrounding Athens. An environment of “spatial mysticism”, which tells moments-traces of cultural and political evolution in Greece, bringing together archival material, fantastic finds of excavations or elements from the field of social anthropology.

Many of the works have references to natural forms. In addition, it is interesting that many of these life styles seem to have been affected by the time and by various natural phenomena. Identifying Julia Kristeva’s text about Proust points to the disrupted experience of time and time (constantly present in the works of the exhibition): “What is the time scale to which you belong? What is the time from which you speak? Yes, we live in a disorganized chronology. (…). For Proust, time is psychic time, and hence the factor that affects our physical life.

As part of the exhibition, Sofia Parlamas will present a part from her collection of kitsch porcelain statues.
